What is glycolic acid and how does your skin transform?

Glycolic acid is a chemical exfoliant that belongs to the Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA) family. It is widely used in facial care products due to its exfoliating, moisturizing and rejuvenating properties. This asset acts effectively on the surface of the skin, offering a series of benefits that can transform your face with regular use.

Is it the appropriate glycolic acid for all skin types?

For mixed skin, glycolic acid balances fat production in zone T (front, nose and chin), while also keeps the driest areas hydrated. For mature skin, glycolic acid stimulates the production of collagen and improves elasticity, which helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. If you have very sensitive or reactive skin, glycolic acid can cause irritation, redness or itching. It is advisable to perform a patch test before using it all over the face or search for products with lower concentrations. If your skin is very dry, the use of glycolic acid can generate more dehydration. If you want to use it, it is advisable to apply an intensive moisturizer then to prevent moisture loss. People with rosacea should avoid glycolic acid, since it can further irritate the skin and worsen the condition.

Step by step to use tonic and serums with glycolic acid

If you are new in the use of glycolic acid, start with low concentration products (2-5%) and use the tonic or serum only 2-3 times per week, gradually increasing the frequency. It soaks a cotton or dismailing disk with the tonic with glycolic acid and gently pass it above all the face, avoiding the area of the eyes. The glycolic acid increases the sensitivity of the skin to the sun, so it is essential to use a sun protector SPF 50 during the day, even if you are not directly exposed to the sun, to avoid damage and spots.
